11. John Hurt
The Role: Thespian extraordinaire John Hurt guested in the show's 50th anniversary celebrations as the so-called War Doctor, the never-before-seen incarnation of the Time Lord who fought in the Time War. It was largely thanks to Hurt's brilliant performance that fans didn't mind this blatant retconning.
Where Is He Now? John Hurt's role in Doctor Who is just a tiny blip in a decades-spanning career which encompasses such varied roles as the Elephant Man, Harry Potter's Ollivander and the one what had that thing burst out of his chest in Alien. As such, Hurt has been very busy since and can next be seen in the upcoming The Last Panthers TV series and the new Tarzan reboot. This year Hurt was also knighted for his services to drama.
On a much sadder note, Hurt has also revealed that he has been diagnosed with early-stage pancreatic cancer. However, he has stayed chipper about the ordeal and has said that the treatment so far has been successful. We - and his countless fans across the globe - wish him all the best and a speedy recovery.
