Doctor Who Character Study - Brigadier Sir Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart

Way back in the day, there was a Second Doctor story called “The Web of Fear”.

an ancient evil menacing Cornwall. He then was present to help the Eighth Doctor deal with what appeared to be demons attacking people in the newly-created 51st US state, Malebogia. He also continued on helping UNIT from time to time, and an alternate version of him worked alongside an alternate Third Doctor and a Scottish UNIT officer who sounded very familiar€ The Brig eventually returned to TV in, of all places, The Sarah Jane Adventures where he helped repel the titular invasion of the Bane. It was a bittersweet moment in a bittersweet story, made all the sadder by the fact that the two primary actors in that story have since passed on, and, as we later learned from the Eleventh Doctor, the Brigadier himself passed away not long after. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBfjPYPqs38 Through his time on the series, the Brigadier was an excellent character. While he was willing to go along with the Doctor€™s schemes more often than not, he also frequently displayed a great independent streak, and didn€™t put up with a lot of the Doctor€™s nonsense. He fought the good fight, and even as the years caught up with him, he was reliable and would be there to help get the job done. Well, unless he was stranded in Peru again. Eventually, however, time caught up with the man, and as the Eleventh Doctor learned, he passed away peacefully in his sleep. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMZP26lblTg&feature=related As for the actor who played him, Nicholas Courtney is notable for having appeared, in either televised or audio format, alongside the actors who played the First, Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, Eighth and Tenth Doctors, and the character he created appeared alongside all those Doctors except for number ten. No one else, not even Sarah Jane Smith, has accomplished something like that. Like many fans, I was saddened to hear about Courtney€™s death last year. He was a good actor and by all accounts, a good man. I never got to meet him, but at least I got to know him a little through the wonderful body of work he has left behind, and that€™s something for which I hope he shall always be remembered. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXEphaqrtYQ
