5. Rose Tyler

Doctor Who Rose Tyler Bad Wolf

As the first companion in the revivied series of of Doctor Who, Rose Tyler had a lot of weight on her shoulders. Could Billie Piper pull of becoming an endearing and engaging companion for a brand new Doctor and a brand series?

Short answer: Yes. Long answer: Yes, but with a Bad Wolf thrown in for good measure.

Rose quickly became one of the most popular characters on the show, both before and after the revival. Her long love story with The Doctor always featured a will they/won't they until she was cruelly trapped behind the wall in Doomsday, finally reaching a resolution in Journey's End.

She was the perfect companion to engage new viewers and was a very welcome return to the packed out fourth season finale.
