Doctor Who: Every NuWho Cyberman Story Ranked Worst To Best

5. Dark Water/Death In Heaven

The Evolution Of The Cybermen Doctor Who
BBC

Much like the Series 12 finale, Series 8 ends with a groundbreaking part one and a terrible part 2.

After the death of Danny Pink, the Twelfth Doctor and Clara Oswald attempt to find the afterlife, only to uncover a sinister plot involving the Cybermen and The Master.

Dark Water ranks among the best Peter Capaldi episodes. Capaldi and Jenna Coleman put in two powerhouse performances while the story is thought-provoking, suspenseful and tragic. The twist that the mysterious Missy was in fact The Master was jaw-dropping, and Michelle Gomez was an instant hit as the legendary villain. The Cybermen's appearance is brief but effective in the opening episode, with the shot of them marching out of St. Paul's Cathedral, a brilliant homage to 1969's Second Doctor story, The Invasion.

Death In Heaven meanwhile leaves a lot to be desired. The plane crash sequence and the return of UNIT are nice enough, but the extended runtime also results in plenty of long and over-bloated stretches where nothing much happens. The biggest problem is that the whole story revolves around Clara and Danny's relationship which unfortunately we just don't enough care about. The poor writing and lack of chemistry between the two characters throughout the series leaves what could have been a highly emotional episode falling a little flat.
