Doctor Who: Every Russell T Davies Episode Ranked From Worst To Best

24. Smith And Jones

Even in his first era, RTD’s season openers weren’t always his best stories.

The concept of a building being transported to the Moon is strong, the decision to cast Anne Reid as a vampire was inspired, and the Judoon are nothing short of iconic.

But with the best will in the world, Smith and Jones is essentially just a simple runaround, which feels like it’s over before it’s begun.

When we’re not following the Judoon, it’s just the Doctor and Martha hiding in loads of different hospital rooms, which isn’t exactly the most exciting thing ever for a grand opener.

And the Tenth Doctor is a little insufferable here, dare we say? The bit where he shakes his feet around then takes his shoes off is a particularly painful watch.

The Doctor tricking “Florence” into drinking his blood to save the day is a brilliant twist though, and as is the case with many RTD1 scripts it's elevated by its characters and heart.
