7. Army Of Ghosts/Doomsday

Doctor Who Doomsday Rose Tyler
BBC Studios

The Series 2 finale gave us the first ever Dalek/Cyberman showdown, plus one of the most heartbreaking companion exits ever.

It’s not hard to see why Rose’s farewell traumatised a generation. Billie Piper completely sells it (her eyeshadow should have been a paid actor) and the soundtrack is just something else.

RTD also did a great job at writing out Jackie, allowing her to finally reunite with her husband.

The moment she meets Pete is just perfect, and her pretending to not worry about how rich he is a great gag.

The Daleks and Cybermen are sort of secondary to all this. But we do still get the iconic scene in the corridor of them insulting each other. Plus the thrilling visuals of the Cybermen raiding people’s homes and Daleks flying through the sky.

Twenty years on and Army of Ghosts/Doomsday is still totally thrilling – and desperately sad.
