Doctor Who: Every Russell T Davies Episode Ranked From Worst To Best

35. The Long Game

Doctor Who The Long Game Adam Mitchell
BBC Studios

The first RTD1 story on the list is the one where Adam Mitchell briefly travels in the TARDIS. Which says it all really.

Though the idea of the “companion who couldn’t” sounds kind of interesting, it hardly makes for exciting viewing

Also, the Doctor dropping Adam home at the end with an infospike in his head doesn’t feel fully thought through (though the pay-off, with his mum, is pretty funny).

Even beyond Adam, the story is pretty dull. And, with its simple space station setting, feels like a hangover from the classic era – unsurprisingly, given that RTD originally pitched it to the Doctor Who production office in the 80s.

In terms of positives Simon Pegg is entertaining as the Editor, there are early career turns from Anna Maxwell Martin and Tamsin Grieg.

But on the whole, The Long Game definitely doesn’t hold a candle to RTD’s other early scripts.
