Doctor Who: EVERY Series Opener Ranked Worst To Best

10. Asylum Of The Daleks

Modern Doctor Who’s first big Dalek opener had lots going for it, from the intrigue of the Daleks calling on the Doctor for help, to the innovative new setting of the Dalek Asylum, to the thrilling promise of “Every Dalek ever!”.

If that wasn’t enough, Moffat throws a complete curveball into the mix, with Jenna Coleman making her Doctor Who debut three months early – not as new companion Clara, but as junior entertainment manager Oswin Oswald.

Though not a top-tier opener, this one gets a bad rep from fans. It’s bold and exciting, with some beautiful writing and one hell of a final twist. And it does, indeed, feature more Daleks than ever before (even if you can hardly see them in the Asylum’s dim chambers).

The main thing that drags it down is the Amy and Rory divorce plotline. Yes, the idea of the Doctor saving their marriage is sweet. But there’s no getting away from the fact that it feels random, and completely disconnected from everything that has gone before.

Still, as a way to begin the show’s 50th anniversary series, it’s not too bad at all. Though you would've expected a bit more from Steven Moffat's very first Dalek story.
