Doctor Who Flux: 10 Huge Questions After Survivors Of The Flux

9. Who Broke The Lupari Shield?

Karvanista recalls the Lupari ship that Bel has commandeered because the ship belonging to Juverost has broken formation, leaving a gap in Earth’s makeshift shield. We’ve never heard that name mentioned before and with no explanation as to why his ship crashed, it feels like an expedient way to pair Bel up with the Lupari for the battle against the Sontarans.

Could there be an explanation in the finale, or is this just a convenient shortcut? What adds to the confusion is that Karvanista is supposedly a Division operative, so like the Weeping Angel and the Doctor he has also gone rogue. Perhaps Juverost is his replacement in the Division. Alternatively, the Grand Serpent’s instructions to an unknown human operative to launch an attack might imply he was also behind Juverost’s ship being destroyed. It certainly paves the way for the Sontarans to invade.

There’s also a chance that someone else has set this up to get Bel there, thanks to some time travelling shenanigans. If Vinder manages to escape from the Passenger with Di, it could be him. The Doctor, her friends, Kate’s underground Earth defence force could also be responsible. It would make Bel’s involvement in the story highly significant, instead of an odd subplot. If Chibnall is doing a full-on Steven Moffat, it could even be the same ship that broke ranks.
