7. You Are The Only Mystery Worth Solving

If he tells me all he knows About the way his river flows I don't suppose, It's meant for me. Oh, how they come and go. Oh, how they come and go. - lyrics from River Man by Nick Drake Hot on the trail of the mysterious apparition, the Doctor and Clara rush to the TARDIS. The Doctor decides to maintain their position in space but travel back and forth in time, searching for clues. When Clara finds out they have witnessed the life cycle of the Earth from birth to death she suddenly realizes just how removed human beings are from a being such as the Doctor. Were all ghosts to you. She whispers. Were nothing. When the Doctor disputes that she cries, Then what are we? What can we possibly be?! The Doctor replies, You are the only mystery worth solving. Ive always wondered why, out of all the creatures of the universe, the Doctor would care so much about humanity. Are we finally going to find out why the Doctor is so enamored with earth? Or maybe this is more to do with the companions in particular. Why is he drawn to these people? Do companions exist to serve him or the other way around? Or is it all one giant cosmic coincidence? Some people have speculated that Clara was engineered. She was fashioned to be the perfect companion in order to lure the Doctor into a trap. Probing deeper into a mystery doesnt mean youll like what you find, or that there will be answers. What if there are only more questions?
