Doctor Who: Hide Review - 8 Little Pieces To Consider

8. The Music Room Is The Heart Of The House

Time has told me You're a rare rare find A troubled cure For a troubled mind. €“ lyrics from €œTime has Told Me€ by Nick Drake Sound and music has featured prominently in each episode of series 7b so far - bells ring out in alert and warning, people sing to calm, soothe and ward off fear, locks are based on sound frequencies. In €œHide€, Emma Grayling specifically states that €œthe music room is the heart of the house.€ Music is the art and science of sound in time. The ghost, as the Doctor discovers, is actually a pioneer of time travel who is trapped in a pocket universe and is crying for help across all of time. Perhaps, to the Doctor, the universe €“ or in this case multiverse €“ is seen as a kind of musical composition where he strives for balance and harmony. If so, is the Doctor the composer or the conductor or the musician - or possibly all three? If we continue to think of Doctor Who in terms of music what is Clara? Is she the note out of place, creating dissonance? When the Doctor asks Emma Grayling about Clara, Emma responds that she is simply an ordinary girl. Maybe the Doctor is asking the wrong question. The perceived sounds of musical notes change in relation to each other. What if Clara€™s mystery is not so much about whom she is but who she will become through her relationship to the Doctor?
