Doctor Who: Ranking New Who Finales From Worst To Best
2. Utopia/The Sound Of Drums/Last Of The Time Lords
There was a lot of exciting build up when it came to the Series 3 finale, what with the Face of Boe proclaiming The Doctor was not alone, and the mysterious Harold Saxon keeping tabs on the Time Lord through Martha's mother, Francine. Everything came to head in Utopia with mind blowing revelations that shocked audiences to the core.
The Master was back! This was the Face of Boe's warning. Not only that, but he had The Doctor's TARDIS, and through the alias of Harold Saxon (another neat twist within the story arc's narrative) had become Prime Minister of Great Britain. This quickly became a thrilling, and suspenseful, storyline through its structure of rendering The Doctor utterly powerless throughout (to the point of being tortored, and humilated), with the Time Lord being forced to be cunning in order to prevent the evil schemes of his arch nemesis.
John Simm crafted a deliciously crazy performance as The Master, but he remained a vicious mastermind, who was hell bent to build a brand new Time Lord empire with the help of the Toclafane. Speaking of which, Russell T Davies really did wonders by connecting them to the last surviving humans seen in Utopia, allowing for a reveal that was both shocking, and depressingly enlightening.
Sure, The Doctor becoming a god-like figure (in order to win the day) was taking things a bit too far, but other than that, this finale has so many memorable concepts, which were carefully woven together to generate an awe-inspiring experience, demonstrating Russell T Davies' genius as show-runner.
