Doctor Who Revolution Of The Daleks: 10 Huge Talking Points After The New Year Special

4. Will Captain Jack And Gwen Cooper Return?

Jack’s exit was somewhat rushed, and in truth there was very little chemistry between Barrowman and Whittaker. It would have been good to see them share more screen time together. The reference to Gwen Cooper, the only other surviving member of the core Cardiff Torchwood team, was a nice touch. To date, the popular Torchwood character has only appeared in the main series of Doctor Who as a cameo in The Stolen Earth/Journey’s End.

The current travel restrictions due to the pandemic may have changed Chibnall’s plans for any near future involvement from Barrowman, given the fact he lives in the States, and if rumours of Whittaker’s departure at the end of the next series are to be believed we are unlikely to be seeing Jack and the 13th Doctor together again.

As for Gwen Cooper, well Torchwood has been disbanded, so as it stands there is no obvious way back in for the character. One avenue that Chibnall may have already considered could be to make use of her career as a police officer. It is something Gwen has in common with Yaz and one can imagine the Doctor trying to pair the two up, especially if she has to let go of Yaz.
