Doctor Who Series 11: 4 Ups & 1 Down From 'The Witchfinders'

2. Alan Cumming's King James I

Doctor Who The Witchfinders
BBC

After lurking in the shadows wearing a mask during the preliminary scenes of the episode, we were all waiting with bated breath for the reveal of the masked man. Was he evil? Was he just odd? Was he absolutely exceptional? Absolutely.

Alan Cumming is just brilliant. The accent, the flamboyancy, the nod toward his sexuality, especially when in discussion with Ryan. Wonderfully awkward, wonderfully warming. Aside from Vinette Robinson’s Rosa Parks, Cumming’s King James is probably the best guest character we’ve had in the series so far. His lighter tone throughout the majority of the episode matched with his darker side when witchcraft was brought into conversation made for excellent viewing.
