Doctor Who Series 11 Finale: 10 Things That Must Happen In 'The Battle Of Ranskoor Av Kolos'

5. A Decent Villain

Whether it’s a classic Who baddie or the return of the Stenza, all fans really want from the finale is this. This year we’ve had a disgruntled cleaner, an angry Indian man, a spaceship eating gremlin and a painful Donald Trump parody. It’s been a deck of low cards. Season 11 must have an Ace up their sleeves for the climax.

Doctor Who has always been a simple show, at heart. Yes, there’s sprawling universes, exploration of history, social commentary and deep characterisation, but the core theme is basic: Good versus Evil. Demons run when a good man goes to war.

This season has been strangely light on that. The aforementioned gremlin wasn’t deliberately malicious, while in Demons Of The Punjab the demons were observers. As for Arachnids In The UK, the spiders were again misunderstood and mankind’s greed was the true villain.

There’s nothing wrong with these shades of grey. In fact, they can be great. But they just haven’t landed this time around. Possibly because a lot of time needed to be spent establishing the entirely new cast, or perhaps they just weren’t very good anyway. Whatever the case, the villain of the finale had better come out swinging.
