Emmys 2017: 9 Ups & 6 Downs

2. Category Fraud Strikes Again

Category fraud is a common talking point at most awards shows, and it reared its ugly head once again this year, as Big Little Lies won the Outstanding Limited Series award despite not really meeting the criteria.

The Emmys defines a limited series as "two or more episodes with a total running time of at least 150 minutes. The program must tell a complete, non-recurring story, and not have an ongoing storyline or main characters in subsequent seasons."

Reese Witherspoon has already stated that Big Little Lies' second season will probably reconvene with the characters from the first, but because this hasn't been officially confirmed by HBO, they just about got away with shoving it into this slot, so it didn't have to compete with The Handmaid's Tale.

Elsewhere, the Black Mirror episode "San Junipero" won the Outstanding Television Movie award, despite clearly being an episode in a limited series at just 61 minutes in length. Fantastic though it was, it had no business being in this field.
