What Should Win

Better Call Saul

Overlooked the last two years, this should be Better Call Saul's time ((but then, Breaking Bad didn't win this award until Season 5). It's the best of those eligible, an incredible slow-burn drama that takes a world we know and love and turns it into something very different, but almost equally brilliant. The performances are all stunning, the direction and cinematography some of the most inventive and beautiful on TV, and the writing gradually crafting TV's best tragedy without losing a sense of humour.

What Will Win

This Is Us / The Handmaid's Tale

The Handmaid's Tale is one of the buzziest new series of the year, and along with that has rave reviews, a great lead performance, and it's incredibly relevant in 2017. That gives it a strong chance of winning in this admittedly stacked field (and the odds obviously favour a newcomer), though This Is Us might have an even better one. It seems well-poised to get a lot of love, it's massively hyped, pulls at the heartstrings, and most of all is a real chance to award this prize to one of the 'big 4' networks, which hasn't happened since 24 back in 2006.
