Even before the Emmy nominations were revealed, there was a lot of worry that Game of Thrones had shot itself in the foot. The entire season as a whole was divisive, but there were still some amazing, all-timer episodes in that final run. However, many fans (even the most generous ones) agreed that The Last of the Starks and The Iron Throne weren't the eps that should have been submitted for consideration.

Fortunately, The Long Night, the epic, battle-focused third episode, was submitted alongside those previous two, and rightly received a nomination for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series. Miguel Sapochnik has consistently been one of GoT's best directors, and this episode was his biggest yet, as he delivered perhaps the most ambitious battle sequence ever committed to TV.

Many assumed that would secure him the award, but in the end it actually went to Jason Bateman, for his work on Ozark's much less flashy Season 2 premiere.
