After the disappointment of Freak Show in season four, American Horror Story crossed the USA from Florida to California to the Hotel Cortez. Though this was the first season without previously ever present cast members Jessica Lange and Frances Conroy, the addition of the stellar Lady Gaga more than made up for it.

Relatively unknown in the world of acting, Gaga’s portrayal of the villainous Countess surprised everyone, even earning her a Golden Globe for best actress in a miniseries.

The season focused, as so many horror stories do, on vampirism, this time in the form of the virus. Though a strong season, the story did seem to dwindle as it geared toward the conclusion, rendering some of the last episodes forgettable at best, and unnecessary at worst.

The subplot of the identity of the Ten Commandments killer is present throughout the season alongside the Countess’ blood lust, though the big twist reveal is not as exciting as would be expected.
