Every HBO Comedy Ranked From Worst To Best

43. Unscripted

Acclaimed director Steven Soderbergh remains a frequent producer of content for HBO, and while his ideas are usually innovative and cool, they’re also quite often not all that good. Case in point: his 2005 comedy Unscripted. As the title suggests, this was primarily improvised by the cast, with all the pitfalls that so often entails.

The show stars three young actors playing themselves as they traverse the pitfalls of Hollywood - acting classes, auditions, attempting to reinvent yourself after being judged primarily by your looks. The verite-style shooting and overlapping improvised dialogue has a loose, natural feel, but at times one can’t help but wish the whole thing was a little more focussed.

Unscripted often seems a little insider, with a laser focus on what life is like for the unknown, grafting actor. If you, the viewer, fit this description, you’ll no doubt nod and empathise at the trials and tribulations. If not, you may feel a little lost here.
