Every HBO Comedy Ranked From Worst To Best
42. How To Make It In America
The second Mark Wahlberg-produced comedy for HBO is a lot more likeable than the Happening star’s first. Like Entourage, How To Make It In America is a story about some young men with a dream, hoping to rise out of their New York neighbourhood and into the stratosphere.
Unlike Entourage, though, this is a show that can approach its premise and characters with a little humility. Its focus is two entrepreneurs looking to break into the glamorous world of fashion. Bryan Greenberg and Victor Rasuk charm in the lead roles, and there are solid parts for Lake Bell and Luis Guzman.
It’s on the fluffy side, and the business exploits of the main characters aren’t quite as intriguing as the writers would like to have us believe. It also took a significant dip in the second season; it never quite seemed to have the full backing of HBO, and fizzled out quietly.
Still, this was a perfectly decent show in its day. Not one to rush out and watch, but a charming underdog worth rooting for.
