6. Sex And The City
One of HBO’s very earliest megahits, the profane, hilarious, super relatable series first took to our screens over two decades ago, and despite the odd moment that hasn’t aged too well, it retains its status as one of the most beloved comedies of all time to this day.
Its key strength is its four central characters: romantic Carrie, straight laced Charlotte, careerist Miranda, and wildcard Samantha. In having four protagonists of such differing temperaments, SATC could all but guarantee to have at least one lead that any given viewer could relate to and associate with.
The women of this version of New York live in, admittedly, a fantasy land, where even a high powered lawyer has abundant free time for leisure, but the matters the show tackled were real and accessible even if you didn’t live a life of luxury in the Upper East Side.
A sensation at the time, SATC has been emulated and downright ripped off many times over, but by virtue of its snappy dialogue, perfect cast, and originality, nothing else has come close to equaling it.
