Every HBO Comedy Ranked From Worst To Best

Mike White’s latest may be his masterpiece. A timely tale of haves and have-nots, The White Lotus is one of the best new shows of 2021. It’s a dark and bitter tale of privilege run amok, but White’s masterstroke is in spinning a story about such difficult people without ever becoming downright nasty.

Set in the titular Hawaiian resort, we’re introduced in quick succession to the guests soaking up the sun and the staffers tasked with running around after their every last whim. The recognisable cast is full of great performances, but special mention must go to Connie Britton, a frequent White collaborator. She has a magical way of portraying a character who can so innocently say and do the worst things while still being likeable.

Among the class tension is a dark mystery of sorts which unfolds across the season. It’s compelling stuff through the characters and humour alone, but its ability to carry on a great narrative amidst this makes it all the more impressive.
