Every HBO Comedy Ranked From Worst To Best

55. Funny Or Die Presents

Sketch shows are by their nature a mixed bag, and this one was more mixed than most. Instead of giving over a timeslot to one performer or a troupe, Funny Or Die Presents… simply turned over control to Will Ferrell and Adam McKay’s website, allowing creatives of all stripes to air their material on the premium cable channel.

Some of it was great. This was the TV debut of Derek Waters’ Drunk History, one of the most enduring formats of modern comedy, and the show featured quality work from reliable hands like Tim & Eric, Zach Galifianakis, and Kristen Wiig.

There’ll always be sketches that don’t hit, though, and some of these fell flatter than flat. Most notable was Brett Gelman’s “1,000 Cats”, an extraordinarily long musical number that would have felt perfectly at home on the internet (where you could simply click off), but less so on TV, let alone on a network you specifically pay for.

11 years later, the idea of just sticking stuff from a website onto the telly seems incredibly outdated, and a lot of the content hasn’t aged too well.
