7. Watchmen (2019)
When Damon Lindelof set out to bring Alan Moore's Watchmen comics to life, he made it clear he didn't want it to be a direct adaptation of the source material, but a sequel that lives in its own world and has its own identity.
Set thirty years after the end of Moore's story, Watchmen steers clear of the Cold War and instead looks at present-day issues such as institutional racism and the ways in which the past effects the present-day. Underneath the social commentary, there's also some fantastic action sequences and a clear sense that the comic influences haven't strayed too far.
