Every Rowan Atkinson Film & TV Project Ranked From Worst To Best
5. Doctor Who And The Curse Of Fatal Death
Doctor Who And The Curse Of Fatal Death is pretty wild. A semi-parody with Atkinson as The Doctor, written for Comic Relief by Steven Moffat, in which he once again faces off against long-term nemeses The Master, and the Daleks.
As the special progresses, the doctor is forced to regenerate a number of times, including a fantastic cameo from Patsy Kensit as (technically) the first female Doctor, as well as turns in the Tardis for Hugh Grant, Jim Broadbent, and Richard E. Grant.
Atkinson is the stand-out in a respectable cast. Whilst most went for slightly hammy parody acting, he actually makes for a pretty convincing Time Lord. Calm, cunning, and slightly aloof, it is something of a shame that this was only a one-off portrayal, in the middle of the long television hiatus between Sylvester McCoy and Christopher Eccleston.
Many modern viewers note the foreshadowing of Moffat's tenure as main Who writer in this project. Although consistently very well received, the writer's work, especially on Doctor Who is characterised by scant regard to plot continuity, a theme that is unashamedly embraced here, being unencumbered by the show actually being canon.
