One element which can seem disconcerting to fans is the influence it seems to be taking from Smallville, the CWs old show about young Clark Kent growing up in his hometown and becoming Superman. Despite its success and 10 year run, Smallville is really a hit and miss among fans because it had several low points thanks to silly and uneven plots with some poor character development (Lana Lang in particular). Smallville did have a lot of high points and was a fairly good characterisation of Clark Kent and Lex Luthor, but it had just as many lows throughout the show's run. Where The Flash seems to take inspiration from Smallville is in its freak-of-the-week inspired plotlines. The trailer mentions how the accident with Star Labs particle accelerator has affected many people throughout Central City and given them special abilities as well. This makes it seem like Flashs mission will be to stop any evil meta-human on a weekly basis, echoing Smallvilles meteor freak hunts. This isnt a totally bad thing, however, as it gives a valid reason for the growth of the super-powered population in both The Flashs and Arrows worlds.
