Episode: The One Where The Stripper Cries (S10E11)

"Let's get Danny DeVito to play a stripper" is a bonkers idea that should never, never have worked; he doesn't exactly have the physique for the job. Fortunately, it does work, thanks to writers Marta Kauffman and David Crane directly tackling the issue of DeVito's unusual looks (unusual for a stripper, at least) in the episode itself.

When Monica and Rachel search for a last-minute stripper they can call in for Phoebe's bachelorette party, they're greeted by Officer Roy Goodbody, an aged male performer who believes he still has the sex appeal and agility he (presumably) had in his younger days. Needless to say, Phoebe did not expect this short podgy dude for her wild sendoff into married life, expressing her disgust when Roy starts to bust some moves.

This angers and upsets Roy, who becomes solemn, realising that it might be time to give up his profession. Feeling sorry for him, the girls encourage him to finish his last dance - which he does - resulting in Danny DeVito dancing around the room like a lunatic, which is the gift we didn't know we needed.

It's heartbreaking to watch Roy face the end of the career he loves so much, but heartwarming to see him put on one last show. DeVito is extremely lovable in the role, managing to make an unusual character one that's easy to relate with - we've all struggled with identity at some point in our lives. He also manages to sneak in a handful of great penis puns, making for a few cheap, but effective laughs.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
