3. It Should Have Ended On A Cliff-Hanger
What Happened
Rachel got off the plane.
It’s over 21 years since Friends first aired, and over 11 years since the gang said goodbye to Apartment 20. The ending answered our most burning questions and allowed us to say goodbye to the show as we would an old friend.
Fans were happy and somewhat satisfied that the gang would be alright and we’d one day fill the hole Friends left with another American sitcom. The warm fuzzy feeling may have benefitted our own mental health, but it didn’t do much for the show itself.
What Should Have Happened
It should have cut before Rachel's decision was clear.
Other shows have ended their finales on huge cliff-hangers. These shows may have tortured viewers but they reached new heights because of it. Theories about The Sopranos’ famous blank screen are still rife, we’re still wondering if Tony Soprano was ever arrested for his crimes, whether his empire would ever come crashing down, and the show finished in 2007.
We never got that with Friends; we still hope that the gang will get back together for a reunion show, but the writers made it clear a reunion just wasn’t necessary.
