They all went off into middle age together happily.
What Should Have Happened
Now we get to truly shocking ways to end the Friends finale, and this one draws on the characters’ experiences throughout the show.
The finale should have uncovered the fact that each of the gang are residents at a mental asylum, and they have fabricated perfect lives as part of their delusional tendencies to hide from the harsh realities of their mental health issues.
Each character has an underlying reason for being this way, which have all already been explained in the show.
Chandler was scarred by his parents’ divorce; Joey crumbled under the pressure of being the only boy in a family of fiery Italian women; Monica was left scarred by her school bullying; Rachel had serious Daddy issues and was self-destructive; Ross has abandonment issues, and Phoebe never came to terms with her Mother’s suicide.
And suspiciously, every character made themselves the perfect ending that answered their dysfunctions. Plus they all live in dirt-cheap apartments in prime locations in New York, have their dream jobs (eventually) and spend most of the working week at the coffee house – this is clearly the stuff of delusion.
