Game of Thrones: 10 Storylines So Boring They'll Put You To Sleep

8. Cersei Lannister V. Margaery Tyrell

Margaery's marriage to Joffrey had some excellent by-products. It freed Sansa from the King's clutches, and also undermined the Lannister's, finally exposing the fragility of their rule over Westeros. In some ways it was nice to see Joffrey's 'mischief' curbed also, but this wasn't without problems. The show's two most divisive characters, in Cersei and Joffrey, were effectively neutered for an entire season. Marriage politics isn't inherently boring, in fact it can be as thematically engaging as anything else you care to mention, but Margaery was never in enough danger for my liking. She really did enter into a hornet's nest, but emerged entirely unscathed (in fact better off with Tommen) after experiencing very little in the way of peril. If Margaery had encountered more serious obstacles along the way, this might have been more engaging. Ultimately though there was a mild sense of threat, purely because that's what we expect from Cersei and Joffrey, which never paid off.
