Game Of Thrones: 20 Most Shocking Moments

2. Ned Stark's Execution

Sean Bean was the reason many fans tuned in for Game Of Thrones in the first place, but it transpired that he would be little more than stabilisers on HBO's fantasy bike. He got the show up and running, and was swiftly removed once people were interested. During the first season of the show, fans weren't aware of how far the show would go to shock them, and if you asked somebody what the greatest surprise could be at that moment, Ned dying would top the list. And that's exactly what happened. Nobody swooped in to save the day, nobody came to the rescue at the final moment, Ned lost his head, and fans lost their minds. It was a startling demonstration of what the show was capable of, but it was topped by arguably the most infamous TV moment in modern times.
