Game Of Thrones: Ranking Every Major Battle From Worst To Best

14. Battle Of Winterfell

Game Of Thrones Stannis Baratheon
HBO

For all of the hype around him, Stannis Baratheon wasn't all that great during the War Of The Five Kings and he's ultimately more undone by his own decisions and a major snowstorm than he is a superior enemy.

Stannis' plan for Winterfell was to overthrow the Boltons - led by their voracious and wholly unstable Ramsay - but the weather stopped his forces in their tracks and conspired (along with the machinations of Melisandre) to lead Stannis to sacrifice his own daughter. Ultimately, that in turn forced his own men to flee (apart from 1300 loyal idiots), his wife to kill herself and Melisandre to abandon him before his tiny army is basically pulverised by the Boltons on the fields outside Winterfell. To make matters worse, his head is then removed by Brienne, so not a good day all round, really.

The episode's a great and awful one, but the battle itself isn't up to much because of the circumstances around it. It's basically no more than a cake-walk for the Boltons and a sad end to Stannis' attempted reign.
