Gendry isn't just any old blacksmith, but a former apprentice of Tobho Mott. Mott was perhaps the greatest smith in all of Westeros, capable of adding tint to metal without paint, and more pertinently capable of working with Valyrian steel, something few others can do.

We already know that he taught Gendry a lot, and the apprentice picked things up very quickly, as evidenced by his bull's head helm. So what if Gendry also learnt how to work Valyrian steel?

The material is going to be incredibly important going forwards, since it's one of the only known substances that can kill a White Walker. Currently at the Citadel and expected to discover, among other things, the secrets of Valyrian steel is Samwell Tarly - but he's no smith.

Instead of heading to King's Landing, and not wanting to risk heading further North where he might also be recognised, perhaps he journeyed South to Oldtown? There he finds some work as a smith, and his talents are called upon by Sam, with the pair working together to forge the weapons that will help save the realm.
