Game Of Thrones Season 7: 9 Ups And 2 Downs From 'The Queen's Justice'

5. The Battle Of Casterly Rock

We knew that this battle was coming, after it was mentioned last week and then teased in the episode's trailer, and yet it did not play out as expected.

Anyone expecting the clash to dominate the last portion of the show in a major action sequence might well be disappointed, as we instead got a rather different take on a Game of Thrones battle scene.

Voice over by Tyrion (another great use of Peter Dinklage in this episode), we saw how the battle could have played out, if they'd attacked it in any usual fashion. Then we see how it really goes down, with the Unsullied sneaking in through his whore's gate, and an all-too-easy taking of the Rock.

The brief moments of action are once again fast and frenetic, similar to the other Unsullied fight sequence Mylod directed on the show, and provide just about enough excitement to scratch that particular itch (it does feel like the show is holding out on us in the action stakes, though next week should make-up for it), while delivering an effective surprise too.

It was also cool to finally see Casterly Rock realised on the show. It's a location we've heard so much about, both on the series and in the books, and the question of who rules it is something that has affected all the Lannisters. It doesn't look as described - it's more standard castle than actual rock - but it's still a big moment to see it.

Euron's fleet destroying the ships isn't so great for Daenerys, as he it means he's once again foiling her plans. She started off so powerful that she has to keep suffering losses to even the playing field somewhat, but the tide has really turned against her now.

It's also probably best not to get to much into the chronology of events and how fast people move around, something the show is increasingly loose with, otherwise we'll be questioning for some time how Euron got there when he did (and how long it took Jon to get to Dragonstone, since Dany only learned of Euron's first attack when he arrived there).
