Game Of Thrones Season 8: 15 Stupid Blunders That Completely Ruined It
9. "Well, Dany Kind Of Forgot About The Iron Fleet"
Speaking of Euron, let’s talk about that Iron Fleet of his that Daenerys just “kind of forgot about”, apparently.
Episode 4, The Last of the Starks, was a godawful episode for many reasons - including the aforementioned Jaime/Brienne hook-up - but its biggest blunder was how the Iron Fleet killed Rahegal.
The Iron Fleet was a terrible plot device that didn’t make any logistical sense. When they took down Rhaegal, they were able to kill him with three consecutive shots from behind a rock, and Daenerys somehow couldn’t see them. But the fleet suddenly become stormtroopers when facing Drogon, who completely obliterates them in the following episode.
Basically, the Iron Fleet were able to kill Rhaegal because D&D wanted to shock audiences, but then couldn’t shoot a single arrow into Drogon, because plot armor. That’s just terrible writing.
And no, Dany did not just “kind of forget” about the Iron Fleet. Varys pointed it out when they were discussing battle strategies earlier in the episode. What really happened is Benioff and Weiss kind of forgot how to write a logical story.
