Game Of Thrones: 8 Things We Learned From "The Laws Of Gods And Men"

5. Varys and Oberyn Are Getting To Know Each Other

As per his agreement with Tywin, Oberyn is now a member of the King€™s small council alongside Tywin, Mace Tyrell (a.k.a. one of Tywin€™s most trusted suck-up), Grand Maester Pycelle, Varys and Cersei. They go through the state affairs, primarily offering 100 silver stags as a reward to whoever kills Sandor Clegane and discussing Daenerys€™s expanding forces. Oberyn states that he has seen firsthand that the Unsullied are not to be underestimated. While he doubts how useful her dragons are, Tywin admits that she needs to be dealt with. He requests that Varys send one of his €œlittle birds€ into Meereen. Oh, and he asks Tyrell, the Lord of Highgarden, to fetch his quill and paper. Tywin€™s a boss! After the meeting, Oberyn and Varys run into each other by the Iron Throne. Varys asks why Oberyn spent so much time in Essos, and the Prince says that it€™s a big world and not many people leave their little corner of it. Oberyn deduces that Varys is from Essos, specifically Lys. He suggests that he come down to the brothel at some point to meet Ellaria, although the others there won€™t do anything for him. Varys reveals that even before his castration, he had no interest in either boys or girls. After seeing what desire has done to the country, he€™s glad he has no part in it, and the absence of desire allows him to pursue other things. When Oberyn asks what, Varys simply glances at the Throne and walks away. Like Littlefinger, Varys has always been one of the players in the game of thrones that€™s been underestimated. Yes, people know he wields a considerable amount of power, but it€™s very likely that he holds more than anyone realises. Varys has plans set in motion that very few will actually learn, and they could be in the interest of the Lannisters or some other family. What Varys wants is to see peace in the kingdom, and he€™ll do what is necessary to see the right person occupying the throne.
