Game Of Thrones: 8 Things We Learned From "The Watchers On The Wall"
6. The Nights Watch Is Clearly Outnumbered
Okay, technically we already knew this, but as Mance Rayders army charged towards the Wall, all we could think was, Holy cr*p! As a show of force, they set the northern forests aflame, and the amount of troops trudging forward is staggering, not to mention Ygritte, Tormund and the other wildlings troops that are attacking from the other side. As the Nights Watch men get their weaponry in order, Alliser Thorne admits to Jon that he should have taken his advice and plugged up the tunnel while he had the chance. However, he also tells Jon that a good leader cant second guess himself, otherwise hes doomed. He states that tonight wont be the end for them as long as the men do their jobs. Unfortunately, doing their job is part of the problem. Along with being outnumbered, most of the Nights Watch men have never seen combat. This is obvious by the way they respond to Thornes orders. When he orders the archers to nock their arrows, they draw instead, and when he orders to haul the barrels, Grenn accidentally drops one of them. While they eventually get their act together, theyre still disadvantaged. Attacked from both sides, they manage to kill a few wildlings, but the invaders from the south end breach the castle and begin slaughtering them. Oh, and by the way, the wildlings forces arent just made up of humans. Theyve also got giants and mammoths on their side! More on that later.
