Game Of Thrones: Top 10 Action Scenes

8. The Skirmishes At Craster's Keep

Episodes: And Now His Watch is Ended, & First of His Name Craster's Keep is a popular spot for violence - considering the types of people who live in it, it is hardly surprising - and both skirmishes staged in this wintry abode showcase some of Game of Thrones' most gut-churning melees. The first of these two action scenes is the mutiny incited by Rast and other members of the Night's Watch, and the second is when Jon Snow's party shows up to dispense justice. They complement each other quite well, one a chaotic scramble for food, another a more straightforward fight of honor vs. ruthlessness. Both of these scenes could very easily have become cliched fantasy-style carnage, but key elements in the execution of both these scenes prevent that from happening - the extremely tense and desperate build up of insults that triggers the mutiny, and yet another tantalising close encounter between the Starks during Jon Snow's attack. Both of these scenes rely on a guest appearance from Burn Gorman as Karl Tanner, a psychopath who epitomises every flaw in the Night's Watch as a system - so the logical conclusion would be to set him up to fight Jon Snow, the most honourable man this side of the Wall. Their fight is almost dance-like in its construction - a man wielding two knives and a man with a longsword. It is also another example of the "honourable man fights dishonourable man" pattern, but this time the dishonourable man is the one who loses, albeit with the help of one of Craster's daughter-wives.
