The costume designers of Girls do a fantastic job: from Marnie's structured block colour dresses to the horrendous vintage sailer frocks that Hannah gets in and out of. Each outfit reeks of fashion faux pas. They're not glamorous but they perfectly highlight the confused quest of identity that each girl is going through. If the show aims to highlight the mistakes we make when we're trying to find our way it has to include those fashion mistakes too. When I was bullied in high school I decided to armour myself with rainbow dreadlocks and knee high socks. When Shoshanna wants to make sure that she's deflowered and NOT devalued, she wears a classy blue dress and sophisticated headwear. It might not all be as achingly hip as Sex And The City's wardrobes, but it is a far more authentic decision.
