Gotham Season 5: 3 Ups & 1 Down From 'The Trial Of Jim Gordon'
2. The Humour
Following on from the previous entry, McKenzie provides a great deal of humour too. While Gotham has proven itself capable of making viewers laugh in the past - specifically in regards to Oswald Cobblepot - it's never been overly comedic before. In fact, it's more often than not the opposite, as the series is mostly known for its dark and macabre tone.
However, a nice balance is achieved between the comedy and the drama in this instalment. Yes, The Trial Of Jim Gordon doesn't shy away from making viewers giggle on occasion, and McKenzie's dialogue - mostly in regards to Victor Zsasz - provides plenty of opportunity for us to do so.
It's not just via the dialogue that we get our laughs, however, as the action sequences in the GCPD - not to mention Bullock tackling Zsasz to the floor in an armoured suit - are equally as hilarious too. Then of course there's Ivy hypnotising Bruce and Lucius, which is utterly divine.
Yes, the comedy arises at all the right intervals, and not once does it feel contrived, as it ultimately aids in lifting the tone of the darker material.
