20 TV Shows That Failed To Stick The Landing

2. How I Met Your Mother

How I Met Your Mother
CBS

There is no show in recent memory that has betrayed audiences more than How I Met Your Mother.

Throughout its run, the charming little sitcom was a flawed but moving affair, a silly but meaningful exploration of one man's quest to find his soulmate that promised audiences a happy ending. A happy ending, that is, that never came.

At the end of the show's final season, hopeless romantic Ted (Josh Radnor) revealed that his beloved wife (Cristin Milioti) had been dead for years, and that he was telling his kids the story of how they met so he could ask their permission to ask out his on-and-off-and-on-and-off-again ex Robin (Cobie Smulders).

It was a major betrayal, reducing the title character to a footnote in her own story so our narrator could run off with to a relationship that had never worked in the past. Attempting to say something about moving on, all How I Met Your Mother did was alienate its entire fanbase. Shame!
