Hannibal: 10 Things That Would've Happened Next
8. The 'Lass' Resort
One of the incredibly annoying loose ends of the series was "Whatever happened to Miriam Lass?" Due to legal troubles with MGM, Fuller's Hannibal couldn't acquire the rights to any of 1991 Silence of the Lambs material - this meant that plot points and characters belonged to the studio, while MGM ended up selling the Clarice Starling story to Lifetime.
Lass therefore served as a replacement Clarice Starling, a rising FBI Agent, who after her brief brush with death, returned for an even briefer stint on the show. Under the influence of Lecter's hypnosis, Lass incorrectly accused Dr. Chilton of being the Chesapeake Ripper, and when put in an interrogation room, shot Chilton (who survived) through the cheek. Lass was never seen from again, and we will never know why she wasn't used further.
Presuming that NBC couldn't get the rights to Clarice, Lass could easily have served as the 'Clarice' character on a more permanent basis - the tough new female presence to go up against Lecter. The whole Will and Hannibal story was winding down to some sort of romantic entanglement, but the show definitely needed a Clarice-esque voice. From what little we saw of Anna Chlumsky's performance, she was more than a great match for Lecter, and it was a shame we didn't see her more.
