Hannibal: 10 Things We Won't Get To See
5. When The Lambs Stop Screaming
This is, of course, the big one – the cancellation of the show is likely to mean that we’ll never see Bryan Fuller’s interpretation of Clarice Starling on Hannibal.
There were issues in obtaining the rights to the characters in The Silence Of The Lambs regardless of NBC’s decision to cancel Hannibal, and Fuller has made it clear that any season four probably wouldn’t have followed that storyline. However, no comprehensive adaptation of this material would ever be complete without touching on the storyline that turned Dr. Hannibal Lecter into a household name, and Clarice Starling is canonically as vital to Lecter’s character as Will Graham has proven to be in Fuller’s version of the story.
Of course, Jodie Foster’s portrayal of Clarice is iconic, irreplaceable, as Julianne Moore found when essaying the character in the Hannibal movie. Having said that, everyone thought the same thing about Sir Anthony Hopkins as Lecter himself, and Mads Mikkelsen has confounded and surprised all who scoffed at the idea of a new, different Lecter.
That, in turn, leads to the traditional geekery of the fantasy casting session: who would you have had play Bryan Fuller’s version of Clarice Starling? How would she have differed from the classic take given by Jodie Foster? Feel free to spitball ideas in the comments if you like… it’s a moot point now.
