4. Quid Pro Quo, Clarice
And of course, the cancellation of Hannibal and the lost possibility of a Bryan Fuller interpretation of The Silence Of The Lambs and Clarice Starling means we won’t get to see Fuller and company have a go at reinterpreting the interaction between Clarice and Dr. Lecter that Foster and Hopkins made so iconic in Jonathan Demme’s 1991 film.
To date, Hannibal has revolved around the relationship between Will Graham and Lecter, a relationship invented for the purposes of the television series: there was no such friendship in either Red Dragon or either of the cinematic adaptations of the novel. It’s a mesmerising game of cat and mouse… only in this case, the cat is pretending to be a mouse, and the mouse is starting to believe that he may have been a cat all along.
Giving viewers a genuine look at a new portrayal of the Lecter/Starling dynamic would necessitate making the Lecter/Graham relationship take a back seat. That might ruffle the feathers of ‘Fannibals’ whose cravings run towards shipping Will & Hannibal eloping together. However, their quibbles might have been assuaged if…
