His Dark Materials: Where You Recognise The Cast From
3. James McAvoy - Lord Asriel
I mean, seriously? If you could place the rest of the cast but couldn’t place McAvoy, I’ll eat Phillip Pullman’s entire bibliography.
Still, McAvoy has had a glittering and incredibly interesting career, so it’s worth cataloguing anyway. Obviously, he’s best known for X-Men, where he played Professor X across four movies, ending with the disappointing Dark Phoenix earlier this year. With Disney gobbling up the rights to X-Men, a reshuffle and reboot is now in order, and McAvoy has probably wheeled his last there.
That’s far from the only recognisable thing he’s started in though. Most recently, he fought Pennywise as the grown up Bill Denbrough in IT Chapter Two. He’s also played multiple personalities in Split and Glass, winning praise for Split especially.
Earlier in his career, he made his name in the likes of Atonement, Wanted, Shameless, Welcome To The Punch and the gloriously underrated Filth. He’s kept up a bit of grit with Atomic Blonde as well.
If you still can’t place him, he voiced Gnomeo in Gnomeo & Juliet and Arthur Christmas in Arthur Christmas. Surely you remember him now?
