House Of The Dragon Episode 1 Review - 8 Ups & 2 Downs
7. Up - Stunning set pieces and costumes
Time away from Westeros has not hurt the quality of either the costume or set department at HBO. The sky high standards from Thrones are matched if not exceeded on House of the Dragon, and many familiar landmarks reappear in all their stunning quality. The opening sees Rhaenyra soaring the skies above King's Landing, showing the beloved city in glorious detail.
The costumes on House of the Dragon are also a visual feast; keeping the elements that earned the originals such glowing plaudits while adding exciting new variants; the grey haired Velaryons and their flowing robes are a notable new addition.
The costumes cannot be praised without mentioning Daemon’s Targaryen dragon themed armor at the tourney, which is a particular highlight. The prince is resplendent in an glorious suit of armor that almost resembles dragon scales; he tops off the top tier new look with a jaw dropping helmet, complete with flowing red Targaryen plume and dragon wings at the temples, to cut an absolutely fearsome sight as he sends riders flying from their horses.
The sets are Emmy deserving in their own right, particularly the Dragonpit and the setting for the tourney; with a catalogue of exciting new locations featured in Martin's source material yet to be unpacked, fans can consider this a sneak preview of even more gorgeous settings and locations to come.
