House Of The Dragon Episode 3 Review - 9 Ups & 1 Down
3. Up - The Lannisters return
The Lannisters always pay their debts and make their return to Westeros in a splendidly intriguing piece of casting.
Jefferson Hall, better known to audiences as Vikings' warrior Torstein, has been cast as twin brothers Tyland and Jason Lannister. The sharp contrast in the brothers personalities and behavior would indicate Hall appears to be the perfect choice to carry the famed Lannister lion banner forward; the hilariously uncomfortable scene between Viserys and Jason after the latter attempts to bestow a gift on the King in a sycophantic manner is awkward comedic gold.
In keeping with the family that Game of Thrones brought to life, Tyland is a brash, arrogant Lannister seeking to wield his wealth like a weapon to secure the hand of Rhaenyra in marriage, in light of her younger brother's birth. Meanwhile, Jason is an anxious worrier, a politician who spends his brief time on screen begging the King to send reinforcements to Daemon and Corlys.
The complete juxtaposition between the two brothers is flawlessly conveyed by Hall, who has even managed to inject a touch of Peter Dinklage's accent into his performance to add an extra level of Lannister authenticity. This appears to be a fascinating new take on one of Westeros' most storied and celebrated families and without trying to offer any spoilers, fans of Fire and Blood will know that both brothers (and particularly Tyland) possess a fascinatingly rich character arc over the course of the story.
Definitely one to keep an eye on in coming weeks.
