How I Met Your Mother: 10 Greatest Fantasy Sequences
6. The Ye Olde Creation Of The Bro Code
The Bro Code is an integral part of How I Met Your Mother, being spoken of many different times, and actually being published into a real book that you can purchase. The supposed origins of the Bro Code are really what makes it special and also what makes it even more absurd.
We are taken back to revolutionary times again to see Benjamin Franklin and George Washington having a drink at a tavern in Philadelphia. Franklin accuses Washington of “codpiece block[ing]” him to which Washington states that there is no rule against it.
After they agree that someone should compile these rules, Barnabus Stinson, Barney’s ancestor, steps up to the plate and decides to write the Bro Code. This scene is so ridiculous, featuring our founding fathers in an argument about who went home with which woman.
This is obviously not true, but it does give the audience a chance to see just how off the rails Barney can get when left with his imagination. The creation of the Bro Code is a moment in the show where the absurdity of Barney’s stories really took shape, giving us the hilarious image of Franklin and Washington partaking in a devil’s three-way with one another.
