2. The Mermaid Theory
The Mermaid Theory is one of the many Barney Stinson tangents that leads to bizarre imagery for the rest of the episode.
The theory simply states that a man will always become attracted to a woman, no matter how initially unattracted to her he is initially. This is all because sailors used to see manatees in the water, and due to being gone from women for so long, would see them as beautiful mermaids in the ocean.
This leads to a scene in which not only is Barney in a sailor outfit with mermaid accoutrements, but also a scene in which Robin is in a manatee suit. This pops up a couple times throughout the episode due to Marshall hanging out with Robin for the first time alone, but it gets even weirder if you can believe it.
Not only is Robin in a manatee suit at one point, but the manatee suit now has a seashell bra and a long blonde curly wig. This image is something that I don’t think any fans of the show, or anyone in general, would have ever expected to appear on television at all, let alone on this series.
